What causes a member check to be returned as 'Refer to Maker'?
Previously, credit unions used Code 38 for “Return to Maker”, but this code is no longer available in the system. This change was initiated by a Reg CC change in 2018. Now, if you are presented with a situation where you need to return a check to another institution, it is recommended that you use one of these codes to clarify the reason for the check return. Some codes allow you to make the change in CU*BASE. Others require that you contact your Check Item Processor. Read below for More...

What should I pay special attention to during 2020 year-end processing, in regards to this year's 1099-MISC changes and the new 1099-NEC form?
When using Tool #990 Work With Accounts Payable Vendors to verify your 1099 vendor information, take special care that you are entering the correct 1099 box number from the 2020 1099-MISC form instructions; especially paying attention to box numbers that changed, including 7, 9, 10, 12, and 14. My member gets a Social Security (SSA) deposit via ACH. We use an ACH distribution to pay the member’s loan payment, but the loan payment was not made. Why did this happen and what benefits are there to using an Automated Funds Transfer (AFT) instead?
Prior to the 16.10 release, the SSA began using multiple Company IDs, and it was recommended that credit unions consider using Automated Funds Transfers (AFTs) to handle distributions. Beginning the 16.10 release a new cross-reference system will be implemented that will automatically funnel all incoming company IDs from the Social Security Administration and treat them as if they came from one, consistent company ID we’re referring to as the “Primary ID.” With the changes ma More...

I am receiving a 'printer timeout error' when trying to print a document to my HP Laserjet 2200. What should I do?
The first thing to do is make sure all the cables are connected securely to the printer and the PC. Be sure to note if one of the cables is a network cable. If all of the cables are securely connected and you still cannot print, restart the PC and the printer. If you receive the same error once the printer and PC are back up, there is likely a hardware issue with the printer. If one of the cables that plugs into the printer is a network cable then the Jet Direct card (a network interface More...

IMPORTANT NOTE: With the new look for It’s Me 247 being released during 2021, the “See” option shown on here is temporarily unavailable. Members who had See-only access previously configured will no longer have access. Jump, however, is still available. Truth-In-Savings requires certain disclosures on periodic statements. One of the disclosures required on dividend-bearing accounts is the “annual percentage yield earned (APYE)”. I have a husband and wife who both receive Social Security payments to the same membership. Now that CU*BASE uses the new way of handling ACH transactions from the SSA, these are causing duplicate distributions to be posted. What should I do if my members still wish for them to be separate transactions?
With the 16.10 release a new cross-reference system was implemented that automatically funnels all incoming company IDs from the Social Security Administration and treat them as if they came from one, consistent company ID we’re referring to as the “Primary ID.” In cases where the Depositor ID is the same, for example a husband and wife, these ACH transactions will be handled by the same master ACH distribution record under the Depositor ID since duplicate Depositor IDs are no More...

There are two methods used to track delinquent loans for reporting purposes in CU*BASE: Method One (for Collections tracking) We have always tracked delinquency in two separate fields for “Months” and ‘Days” in the member files. When a loan is 30 days delinquent, it shows as “0 Months, 30 Days” delinquent. When a loan is 31 days delinquent, it is “1 Month, 0 Days” delinquent. Why on an ATM or Debit card do I need to flag a member's card as "hot" and also close the same card in order to close the linked account or close the membership?
When a credit union statuses a member's card as 'HOT' or warm (Lost/Stolen/Fraud/Restricted), this information is transmitted immediately to your vendor to stop any further withdrawals/purchases being performed with that particular card. But at your vendor a 'Hot Card' is not considered to be a closed card. When your member's card remains at a HOT or Warm card status on CU*BASE, CU*BASE is still required to send any maintenance updates such as address change, phone numbe More...

What are the differences between an online ASP and in-house e-document strategy?
The differences ultimately come down to control and cost. The online ASP system is the fastest, simplest, most inexpensive way to get started with an e-documents strategy for your credit union. With online ASP you offload the back-end service management headaches to CU*Answers. We manage, backup, secure, and patch/upgrade the eDOC servers and databases and these processes fall under our SAS 70 and third party security audits. However in the Risk Model format it is not always feasible.
